چکیده

In this paper we present multifrequency VLA observations of the giant radio galaxy 3C 449. High resolution and sensitivity data were obtained in total intensity and polarized flux at 1.365, 1.445, 1.465, 1.485, 4.685, 4.985 and 8.385 GHz. The source is characterized by an unresolved core, two opposite symmetric jets, and very extended lobes. These new images show the source morphology in great detail, in particular we detect plumes and wiggles in the low brightness lobes. The source is considerably polarized at all frequencies. We find that the magnetic field orientation is parallel to the jet axis at the very beginning of the jet, and becomes perpendicular at about 10′′(5 kpc) from the core. In the low brightness regions, the magnetic field is circumferential to the edges of the emission region. The spectral index map between 5 GHz and 8.4 GHz shows that the northern region beyond 1′ from the core has a much flatter spectrum than the southern one. We analyse the jet dynamics, and conclude that the jets are relativistic at the beginning, and decelerate significantly within 10′′(5 kpc) from the core. We compute the rotation measure, using all seven frequencies between 1.4 and 8.4 GHz. We detect significant rotation measure with values within about ±50 rad m−2 of the expected contribution of our Galaxy. The Faraday effect is likely to originate in an external screen, which is most probably the intergalactic medium of the group of galaxies around 3C 449. Moreover, we resolve the effect of the interstellar medium associated with the galaxy 3C 449 itself.

The continuum radio emission from the Sy 1 . 5 galaxy NGC

We present new continuum VLA observations of the nearby Sy 1.5 galaxy NGC 5033, made at 4.9 and 8.4 GHz on 8 April 2003. Combined with VLA archival observations at 1.4 and 4.9 GHz made on 7 August 1993, 29 August 1999, and 31 October 1999, we sample the galaxy radio emission at scales ranging from the nuclear regions ( < ∼ 100 pc) to the outer regions of the disk (∼ 40 kpc). The high-resolution...

Deep low-frequency observations with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope: a search for relic radio emission

We present deep multifrequency observations using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope at 153, 244, 610 and 1260 MHz of a field centered on J0916+6348, to search for evidence of fossil radio lobes which could be due to an earlier cycle of episodic activity of the parent galaxy, as well as halos and relics in clusters of galaxies. We do not find any unambiguous evidence of episodic activity in a ...

Restarting activity in the giant radio galaxy J1835+620

We present radio and optical observations of the peculiar radio galaxy J1835+620, a member of a new sample of large angular size radio galaxies selected from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey. Its optical counterpart is in a group of at least three galaxies and shows strong, narrow emission lines which allow us to measure its redshift as z = 0.518. The derived cosmological distance places J1835+620 among...

Dynamics of the radio galaxy 3 C 449

We present ROSAT PSPC observations of the twin-jet radio galaxy 3C 449. The soft X-ray emission from this object is dominated by an extended halo with a scale comparable to that of the radio source. The asymmetry of the X-ray emission is reflected in that of the radio lobes, providing evidence that the behaviour of the jets is strongly influenced by the external medium. A region of reduced X-ra...
